The Biggest Indiana Jazz Event of the Year: Indy Jazz Fest

Several thousand people come to the Indy Jazz Fest every year. The festival’s success and popularity is because of the many extremely talented musicians who came to Indy (or stayed here) and continue to feed the jazz scene. Those who come to the Indy Jazz Fest hear some of the best jazz talent locally and nationally. Local organizers are tapped into the entire jazz scene and know how to book an awesome festival. Indy Jazz Fest 2020 is coming up on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2. It will he held at the MacAllister Amphitheater at Garfield Park. There’s a wonderful variety in the lineup of artists coming to the city to play at Indy Jazz Fest this year. Plus there’s a great lineup of local artists who will be featured as well as some of Indiana’s top young jazz musicians.

 

 

Indy Jazz Fest Lineup

Most music fans probably recognize the bigger names on the Indy Jazz Fest 2022 lineup including Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway, Tank and the Bangas, and Norman Brown. Other artists who will be performing include Terri Lyne Carrington, Norman Brown, Jonathan Scales, Butcher Brown, Rebirth Brass Band, and Ghost Note. All of these artists are going to put on a fantastic show and you can check out links and videos to learn more about this year’s lineup on the Indy Jazz Fest Artists page.

In addition to these national acts, quite a few local jazz musicians will also be performing. From The 317, will be opening the festival on Saturday, October 1, 2022. This group is a collaboration lead by Rob Dixon and features many Indianapolis artists and has a great range of diversity in their sound. Some of the artists performing include Rob Dixon, Josh Kaufman, Foxd'Legnd, Maxie, Charlie Ballantine, Brandon Meeks, and Richard "Sleepy" Floyd. From The 317 has been working on an album that will come out in early 2023.

The Indiana All-State High School Jazz Combo featuring Derrick Gardener on trumpet will be opening the festival on Sunday, October 2, 2022. This group is made up of some of Indiana’s very best jazz students.

Also, while the festival ends at 10pm both nights, the music continues! After Jazz Fest, The Mousetrap is hosting the after party. Both nights have incredible lineup of musicians scheduled including From The 317 Sessions, Howie with Kiella Monique, Glynis Yowell, Clint Breeze, Joel Tucker, Deron Bell and D.J. Anderson. Festival Organizers

The Indy Jazz Fest is presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to preserve the legacy and promote the future of Jazz in Indianapolis. Those who played a major part in organizing the Indy Jazz Fest and kick-off events include David Allee, The Jazz Kitchen owner and Festival Director, Rob Dixon, musician and Art Director for the festival, and Richard “Sleepy” Floyd the Festival Booker.

Jazz music reaches through an unlimited number of other genres and this lineup highlights so many styles. Even for those who may not love the “jazz” genre, will likely be pleasantly surprised to learn that they really enjoy some of the music in this year’s lineup.

Indy Jazz Fest Naptown Sounds Kick-off Celebration

There’s an Indy Jazz Fest kickoff party and you won’t want to miss it. Hosted at The Jazz Kitchen, come enjoy some of Indianapolis’ best jazz musicians the night before the festival starts. On Friday, September 30 from 8pm-12 midnight, the Indy Jazz Fest Naptown Sounds Kick-off Celebration is sure to get everyone even more fired up for the full festival. There will be 25+ Indianapolis jazz musicians playing that night including the Indianapolis Jazz Collective, The Phelps Connection, Jared Thompson and Premium Blend, The Organnizers, Pavel Polanco-Safadit, and the Charlie Ballantine Quintet. There will be food and drinks. This is one of the best ways to support these artists and the great work the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation is doing.
